Writer's picture: The Joy of GenerosityThe Joy of Generosity

The story is told of the young banker who was raking in money hand over fist. His career had skyrocketed to the top and his salary was enormous. The more he made, the more he became enamored with money and the things it could buy. He bought the most expensive clothes, drove the nicest car, wore a $25,000 Rolex watch and stayed at the ritziest hotels. As his glamorous lifestyle escalated, he began to treat people like objects and value money above all. One day as he was driving his sports car on a winding mountain road, a fallen boulder in the road forced him to swerve to the edge of the cliff. His car teetered on the edge just long enough for a passerby to rush to his aid and pull his unconscious body from the car before it plummeted over the cliff. When he awoke minutes later, he demanded to know what happened to his car. “It fell over the cliff,” said the man who saved the young banker. Instead of thanking the man, the banker groaned, “Oh, my BMW. Oh, my wonderful car, it is lost.” “Unfortunately,” said the young man’s rescuer, “that is not the worst news. When the car plunged over the side, your left arm was caught and you lost your arm as well.” Immediately the young banker began to groan, “Oh no, my Rolex was on that arm. Oh, my Rolex!” Of course, we would think a man would border on insane who thought more about his car and his Rolex than he thought about his physical safety. Yet, on a daily basis, people speed through this life allowing money to control both their thoughts and actions. Money is truly a miserable master, and in The Joy of Generosity class, we will see the terrible things it has forced it's servants to do over the years, and how to overcome it.
